Ask any C-Suite executive what their company vision is, and they’ll likely have no problem explaining where the organization is headed and how they intend to get there. However, saying it and doing it are two different things. Just because a vision is well-written doesn’t mean it’s well-executed.
Luckily, with the proper planning and management, you can successfully achieve positive change and growth. Here are five factors to consider when executing your vision:
1. Create an Action Plan- “Vision is the search for meaning. Strategy is the route we take to get there.” (Crestcom) Clear, thoughtful communication allows your plan to be followed by others on your team. Decide on your core values, then work toward gaining employee support. One of the most influential factors in success is planning, so pay careful attention to how your message is received.
2. Rally Your Team- As a C-Suite executive, you’re leading the way to change and growth, but you don’t need us to tell you that you can’t go at it alone. Ask yourself how you can get your team to respond in the manner you’re seeking, then execute accordingly. Employees must be on board to adapt to new behaviors and thought processes. The more inspiring your delivery, the more likely others are to follow.
3. Seek a Diverse Perspective- It’s easy to get caught up in our daily microcosms, but bringing your vision to fruition requires unbiased input from staff at all levels of the organization. Take time to invest in opinions and feedback from various departments. When you consider how your team’s skills complement your strengths, it allows for a smooth transition of leadership.
4. Assess Periodically- How will you determine if your strategy is working? Decide which metrics will measure the success of your vision, then set a timeline for accomplishing each step. Evaluate these initiatives and provide adequate feedback to keep everyone on track
5. Remain Flexible and Fluid- Even the best-laid plans can go awry, but that doesn’t mean it has to throw you off track. Be flexible, and make adjustments accordingly. There will be internal and external issues, but don’t let that sway your priorities. Staying on top of changes in real-time prevents issues from building and your mission becoming stale.
The difference between a good leader and a great one is their vision and commitment to it. It takes a significant amount of time and effort to create and execute a new direction for your company, so no doubt you’ll want to get it right. A solid plan, team support, and a flexible approach will help you get there.
