Creativity and control— two words that don’t necessarily go together, yet each serves an integral part of any marketing position. Inundated with deadlines, restrictions, and direction from multiple sources, many find frustration in the creative and development process. But it doesn’t need to be that way!
Believe it or not, it’s possible to maintain control in a marketing role while still respecting boundaries and adhering to a set timetable. Even in heavily regulated industries like Pharma, it’s possible to be inspired— you just need to know where to look.
Here are five tips for inspiration so you can keep those creative ideas flowing!
Seek Input From Patients- Want to know what will resonate most with your audience? Ask them directly! Reach out to patient communities and do some social listening. You’ll be able to create a compelling brand story that the company will back and support. It also shows that you’re willing to listen to the needs and wants of its consumer.
Collaborate With Other Departments- You are not a silo working on a solo mission. Seek valuable input from other departments and welcome opportunities for collaboration. When you help break down walls between different divisions, doors open for new opportunities and more creative solutions. Having a fresh set of eyes on a project never hurts. It may be just the perspective needed to spark a new idea.
Know Your Brand- To comply with a company’s requirements for its brand, you must be well-versed in all facets of the organization. Take time to research its values, culture, and mission. Doing so provides the expert knowledge needed to think outside the box when crafting new marketing strategies. Will you have restrictions? Of course. But you’ll also have a better starting point for content creation.
Maintain a Positive Work Environment- Those around you will feed off your energy, so do your best to keep things positive. How is this correlated to creativity? According to Alice Flaherty, a Ph.D. in neuroscience, dopamine is what makes our brain creative. And our brains release dopamine when we feel good, so your work environment should do the same!
Prioritize a Work/Life Balance- This is perhaps the one area where you have the most control. While multi-tasking is a necessary part of the work day, stress and worry can affect our ability to focus, preventing creative ideas from developing. Whether back in the office or still working remotely, set time to take breaks, and construct reasonable goals (both personally and professionally) for yourself. Doing so provides the optimal balance, allowing you to be more successful in your marketing role.
Staying creative in an industry with extensive regulations and limitations can be challenging and, at times, frustrating. But remember there are factors within your control, and if utilized correctly, they'll increase productivity, job satisfaction, and the influx of innovative ideas.
