Announcing a new C-Suite hire is an exciting time for any company. They offer a new vision, new experiences, and new growth. While intimidating, this also brings enthusiasm and a fresh perspective. Often, it’s the perfect shift a corporation needs.
But all this positivity will only occur if the transition happens smoothly. Multiple facets are at play, and they all need to work in synch.
With the upcoming months being a prime time for job changes, here are our top five tips for a seamless move into a new C-Suite role:
1. Create a Clear Vision- Develop a timetable with realistic goals and accomplishments. You can’t speed up time, so don’t rush the process. Plan for how long things will take but allow for fluid adjustments. Be forthcoming with your goals to team members and update both progress and setbacks.
2. Consult Frequently with Board Members- In the first few months, CEOs should set aside dedicated time to converse with the board. Without cultivating a solid rapport, miscommunication and assumptions often develop. Present tangible goals and check in with any concerns. When there is a mutually supportive partnership between the chair of the board and the CEO, the probability of success is exponentially enhanced.
3. Ask Questions- Understanding how the company operates is crucial. Avoid making immediate moves to prove your worth— you were hired for a reason! Take time to grasp the scope of internal procedures and politics. Then, when the time for change does come, you’ll be well equipped to make the best decisions.
4. Acclimate to the Company Climate- Yogi Berra once said, “You can learn a lot by watching.” We can’t stress enough the importance of observing the values and beliefs ingrained within the organization you’re joining. Give yourself time to learn and adapt. Your experience and talent are what got you here, but just like with any position, there’s a learning curve. Understanding and accepting the preferred way to engage with your team will speak volumes about your leadership.
5. Find Balance- Remember why you're here, and congratulate yourself on how far you've come. Now is the time to integrate past endeavors with future possibilities. Burnout is real, but with the right mindset, you’ll avoid being just another statistic in corporate America.
